The Heart Behind Outreach
This next week will be our last week of lecture phase. My time here has continued to be very special. I am enjoying living in this community as I learn more about what it looks like to live fully for Jesus. As the weeks go by we are getting closer and closer to the outreach portion of our program. It feels absolutely crazy that in less than a month we will be leaving the island. With that, I am still so excited for what’s to come in the next three months.
The goal of our outreach is to be able to come into a community and show them the radical love of Jesus Christ. We will be going into cities across America and hosting worship nights, sharing the gospel, and serving the community. As we share the gospel we desire to be encouraging new believers to get connected with local churches. In each city that we go we will be working with local churches to encourage their church body to step into the calling on their lives from God.
“Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
A part of the calling for all Christians that Jesus said in Matthew 28:18-20, is to make disciples in all the nations. In this season of covid it is not possible for us to be sending teams to all the nations, so we are excited to continue The Great Commision in America. Around the world, 42% of people have never heard the name of Jesus. One of the ways that we can continue to make that number smaller is to activate more believers to have a desire to be sent into the nations. Therefore, as we make disciples we are also coming to encourage American believers to desire to partner with the global church and go into the nations as well.
The reason we are going to America is to activate believers to finish the great commission.
Currently in America only a very small portion of donations to the church are going to the unreached. During lecture this last week, our speaker shared some surprising numbers with the class in regards to Americans tithes. On average American Christians tithe $700 billion a year. Of that, 98.6% goes to pastoral ministries, and only $2 billion go towards missions. Within that, 5% is going to forgiven missions and only 1% is going to the unreached. This does not mean that all American tithes are going to unnecessary places all together, but the majority is not being used to share Jesus to people around the world who have never heard the gospel. Therefore, another way to be a part of finishing the great commision without going to the nations is to partner with current missionaries or organizations that are working to spread the gospel in financial and spiritual support.
COMMISSION THE CITY TOUR
Mid-December, our school will send out around 180 students to Colorado. While in Colorado we will receive some more hands on training for how to wrap around a community in practical ways. We will be partnering with local ministries to help serve the Colorado Springs area. After two weeks, we will then send teams of around 10 people to criss-cross through America to show the love of Jesus by serving in communities and sharing the gospel.
My specific outreach team will be going to Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia. As of now, we will have eight different stops, with most of them being in the Atlanta area. We will be spending around 3-5 days in each stop. Beginning with a worship night and then, over the next few days, teaching practical steps to equip and partner with the local church to serve their communities. Each place will look a little different and I can’t wait to see how God uniquely moves.
WAYS TO PARTNER WITH MY TEAM
Prayer that we are able to work effectively as a team even as we are all being challenged in a way that pushes us out of our comfort zones. Another really important thing that we are praying about as a team is that the hearts of the people we will be interacting with in the south would be ready to receive the gospel. As well as, that God would highlight very specific families within those communities that we can offer wrap around care to help uplift them.
Another way that would be very helpful is financial support. I have seen God provide in amazing ways already throughout these last couple months. Trusting that the heart of God is to provide for His children is a concept I was struggling with at home, therefore it has been so great to feel God changing my perspective. This last week they announced that our outreach tuition had to be raised because of increased prices for food within America versus when going to other countries. If you are willing to support me in this way there are a few ways to give below.
